FAQ for suncare:

What is the best type of sunscreen for your face?

The choice of a facial sunscreen depends on your skin's specific needs, as well as your preferences when it comes to format and texture. Your sunscreen needs to guarantee broad-spectrum UVA/UVB protection to prevent the risk of skin cancer and photo-aging. Photoderm suncare products are available with different SPF levels and textures: ultra-fluid, cream, milk.

Our detox suncare innovation, Photoderm XDefense Ultra-fluid SPF50+ is recommended by dermatologists for all skin types, and delivers a healthy glow to your skin in 28 days.

If you have sensitive skin, try our high-tolerance, fragrance-free, dry-touch Photoderm Aquafluide SPF50+

If you're looking for one that helps with hyperpigmentation and wrinkles, try our Photoderm SPOT-AGE SPF50+, designed to prevent and reduce hyperpigmentation and dark spots.

What SPF sunscreen do dermatologists recommend?

Dermatologists generally recommend an SPF level between 30 and 50+, depending on your skin type and exposure. If you have fair, sensitive skin, stick to a facial sunscreen with SPF50+ in all circumstances. SPF50+ remains the benchmark for strong sunlight and prolonged exposure, particularly near or on the water and in the mountains where the sunlight is strongly reflected. For darker skin tones, a SPF30 face sunscreen may be sufficient, especially if the sun is not that strong. Make sure you choose a sweat and water-resistant formula, especially in sunny Singapore.

How much sunscreen should I apply to my face?

More than you think! We often apply less sunscreen than recommended. To obtain the level of protection indicated on your sunscreen, you need to apply 2 mg of product per square centimeter of skin. In practice, this means half a teaspoon for the face and neck or a quarter of a teaspoon for your face only. Don't forget you need to reapply face sunscreen regularly during the day as sweat, rubbing and swimming can remove or reduce the performance of your suncare product.

When should you apply sunscreen in your skincare routine?

Face sunscreen acts like a shield between your skin and the outside world. It should therefore be applied as the last step in your routine.  Avoid mixing sunscreen and moisturizer to save time, as this could reduce the effectiveness of the SPF.

Should I apply sunscreen before or after makeup?

We recommend applying your face sunscreen before putting on your makeup. If you need to reapply sunscreen, it’s best to choose a sunscreen that will keep your makeup in place while optimizing your protection.

Do you need to apply sunscreen even when you are indoors?

Yes — indoor skin is not fully protected skin. Even when you're inside, your skin is still exposed to multiple environmental stressors that contribute to premature aging, pigmentation, and cellular damage. Standard windows block UVB rays but do not block UVA, which is responsible for up to 95% of the UV radiation reaching Earth's surface. UVA penetrates deep into the dermis, breaking down collagen and triggering hyperpigmentation — even on overcast days.

For complete indoor protection, choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen that shields against UVA, UVB, blue light, infrared radiation, and pollution — not just a standard SPF. Apply it as the last step in your morning skincare routine, every day.
